Winter ‘26/Spring‘26

Shalom! Thank you for reading what I have to say. The JLC has celebrated many “wins” this school year, despite various challenges. We have managed to host Sukkot and Hanukkah festivals, welcomed many new families, blessed a bunch of pets on our 2nd Saturdays/Shabbatstock/Shuk, and we even sold 84 bazillion latkes! As a community, we shared a couple of Family Shabbat services, and made an attempt at kayaking in inclement weather. To say that we made lemonade from lemons is an understatement!

The second half of our school year focuses on social action. In February, we will decide where our tzedakah will go and in April, we will join other synagogues and non-profit organizations as we commemorate our annual Mitzvah Good Deeds Day. This concept of giving back is so fundamental to our faith and humanity that I wish every day could be celebrated with service.

I also think that we should celebrate more. Not just those required Hallmark Holidays and spiritual holy days, but those other important days too – like Tuesday, or Groundhog Day, or Belly Laugh Day which was January 24th. Don’t forget about our Purim celebration! Our theme is Under the Sea and there will be a family costume contest – I challenge you to beat the Segals. Celebrations are fun and exciting. They leave you with a sense of euphoria and that happiness stays with you.

I think that is why I always enjoy Shabbat at TBE. It is the ultimate celebration! Every week, we have this little “party” planned to break from the routine and sing (sometimes dance) and enjoy our Temple family. We celebrate Shabbat at 7PM, and I encourage all of my families to make a point to enjoy Shabbat with us.

Lastly, I would like to ask for help.  This is something that I am not very good with doing, but in the spirit of social action and celebration, if you have a few hours free on a Sunday morning and would like to come to TBE to work with some of our youngsters, please contact me. I am looking for congregants who would like to share their Hebrew skills with our older students, and those that would like to read to our youngest learners. I can be reached via email:  barbara@tbehollywood.com.

Wishing you all an abundance of love, community, and hamentaschen.
